Sammer could soon take on the role of sporting director.
Matthias Sammer has refused to rule out a move to Hamburg amid reports linking him with a switch to the northern German club to take on the role of sporting director.

According to recent reports from Bild and Hamburger Abendblatt, in recent days there have been "intense negotiations" between Sammer, who is currently the sporting director of the German national team, and Hamburg.

The report comes after the Hamburg supervisory board met on Tuesday, and allegedly cited the Sammer matter as having played an "important role" in the discussions. The only potential stepping stones are wages, and the possibility of other clubs being interested in adding Sammer to their ranks.

Sammer had previously ruled out a club-level position, but after having a series of power struggles with Germany coach Joachim Loew, might be interested.

Sammer himself has now fuelled the rumours as he spoke to German Sky minutes before the start of Friday's Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

"We have a simple arrangement [with the DFB]. If a time comes when I want more or when I am seeking a new job, I speak first with the two [DFB president Dr. Theo Zwanziger and DFB general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach].

"So far I have not spoken to them and I stick to agreements but we will wait and see."
