Arsenal Consider Shock Move For Tottenham Defender Jonathan Woodgate

Arsenal are reportedly considering a surprise move for Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Arsene Wenger has admitted he may need to sign a new centre back in January after Thomas Vermaelen sustained a long term Achilles injury and Sebastien Squillaci has been forced out of action repeatedly with various knocks.

Wenger refused to comment on speculation linking the club with a bid for Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill earlier on Friday, and now understands the Frenchman could be set to make Arsenal's bitter rivals an offer for the stopper.

Woodgate is returning from his own nightmare spell on the sidelines and has not played a competitive game since November 2009.

The former Newcastle, Leeds United and Real Madrid man played 45 minutes in a behind closed doors friendly for a Spurs XI against QPR during the week and is looking to work his way back into first team contention.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has previously expressed a willingness to allow Woodgate to pick up match practise by going on loan to a Championship club, with QPR and Leeds believed to be interested.

How willing Redknapp would be to do business with Arsenal, however, remains to be seen, while Wenger may still be concerned with the defender's past injury record.
