Former Arsenal and Barcelona full-back Giovanni van Bronckhorst feels that Dutch compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy still has sufficient quality to score goals for Real Madrid.

The veteran striker could be set for a dramatic return to the Santiago Bernabeu just 12 months after leaving for German side Hamburg, with Los Blancos coach Jose Mourinho desperate to add an attacker to his squad in the current window.

When asked his opinion of whether the prolific hit-man could still perform for the Spanish giants, Van Bronckhorst was unequivocal in his belief that the 34-year-old is still capable of finding the net on a regular basis.

He commented: “Van Nistelrooy has a difficult situation because Madrid intends to sign him. He is a great player, he has did well at the clubs he has played with, as well as for the Netherlands.

“I think he is of the level to return to Real Madrid. I think that he would be a good fit.”

Van Bronckhorst also spoke of the arrival of Ibrahim Afellay at the Camp Nou, saying: “It will be very good for him to play in a team like Barcelona, because they play fantastic football. Being next to stars like Messi, Xavi and Iniesta will benefit him.”
