Juventus Striker Luca Toni: Milan & Inter? The Best Don't Always Win

Luca Toni still believes Juventus have what it takes to overhaul Inter and Milan.
Juventus striker Luca Toni has warned Inter and Milan that just having the best players could be insufficient for Scudetto glory.

Toni, who joined Juventus from Genoa in January, believes it's team cohesion which makes the difference, not individual talent.

"It's the group which counts, the will of the team. Maybe we have something less compared to Inter and Milan, but the best side doesn't always win," Toni told Hurra Juventus magazine referring to the Old Lady's wins over both Milanese giants this season.

"But we need positive results and consistency to be able to make the step up in quality.

"There are many young players in this team and if things go well then we can aquire security and give an important contribution.

"And I think in future the Juventus of the golden years will return."

Milan Back In For Manchester City Striker Mario Balotelli As Striker Search Widens

Milan looking at Mario Balotelli again, as well as Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner.
Milan's shortcomings in the Champions League have sparked the search for strikers as Manchester City's Mario Balotelli comes into view for the summer.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports directors at the club are not impressed a team with Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic leading the line failed to beat Tottenham.

And they are already planning ahead for next season with Balotelli first on the list.

He has long been linked with Milan, but City boss Roberto Mancini said on Monday his player is "happy" at Eastlands.

Balotelli is viewed as an alternative to Ibrahimovic, who has often struggled in big games this term.

And with Mino Raiola acting as the agent of both strikers, a move could take off.

Arsenal hitman Nicklas Bendtner is also on the horizon. Robin van Persie's return to excellent form has seen chances limited for the Danish striker.

Milan are said to be on standby for him too should he reconsider his future at the Emirates.

Roma Champions League Tie Not Over Yet - Shakhtar Donetsk's Eduardo

Shakhtar Donetsk striker Eduardo has pointed out that the Champions League tie with Roma isn't over yet.
Shakhtar Donetsk surprised many with a 3-2 away win against Roma in Wednesday's Champions League round of 16 match, but attacker Eduardo has made it clear that the tie isn't over yet and that a lot can happen in the return.

"Everyone's delighted with that 3-2 win, but we know it's not over yet. We have another 90 minutes in Donetsk and we hope we can do just as well at home in front of our own supporters. It won't be easy but tonight was a big result for us," said Eduardo on the official UEFA website.

"It's very hard to get back into the swing of things after not playing for about three months. Our last game was against Braga on December 8 so it was tough because we didn't play competitively, we only played pre-season games and friendly matches.

"But you could see in the second half when Roma pushed up and dominated possession, we weren't quite able to counter-attack for a fourth goal."

The second leg will take place at the Donbass Arena on March 8, and Eduardo is eager not to take progression for granted.

"We still have 90 minutes left in Donetsk, but if we qualify then we can think about the quarter-finals and then maybe have a bit of luck and play against a good club, but hopefully not a top club like Arsenal or Barcelona."

Paraguay international Antolin Alcaraz has tried to lower the expectations ahead of the Copa America.
Paraguay impressed at the 2010 World Cup and finished ahead of Slovakia, New Zealand and Italy in the group stage before eventually being eliminated by Spain.

The good performances in South Africa have raised expectations in the South American nation for this summer's Copa America, but defender Antolin Alcaraz has made it clear that the Guaranies are not getting carried away.

"Like the World Cup, we will try to play our game, take the matches one at a time and try to win them all if possible," Alcaraz was quoted as saying on the official FIFA website.

"I think now because we did well in the qualifying for the World Cup people will expect more from us in the Copa America, I think everybody is already seeing Paraguay in the final.

"Normally this is good, for the team and the people, but the most important thing will be working hard to get off to a good start in our first game."

The Copa America takes place in Argentina from July 1 to 24.

Luis Fabiano claims that his six-season spell at Sevilla is drawing to a close.
Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano believes his time with the club is drawing to a close, and plans to negotiate a transfer away from the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in the summer.

The Brazilian international has struggled for fitness and consistency in front of goal this season, managing 12 goals in 29 appearances for Los Nervionenses.

The 30-year-old only put pen to paper on a new deal through to 2013 at the end of the summer transfer window, but in an interview with GloboEsporte stated his desire to end his six-season spell in Andalucia.

He is quoted as saying: “I will sit down and talk with the leaders, and see what is best for both parties, because my cycle in Sevilla is over.

“These past months have been difficult, there has been much speculation and injury, and the coach has decided to bench me. I’ve have went four consecutive games without playing, but I have to accept and take every opportunity.”

Clubs from his homeland such as Corinthians and Santos, as well as English Premier League sides Blackburn and Tottenham Hotspur, are likely to be put on alert to the attacker’s availability.

Brazil To Meet Scotland On March 27

The Brazilian FA has announced an international friendly against Scotland on March 27.
The Brazilian Football Association (CFB) has announced that the Selecao will take on Scotland in an international friendly on March 27. The match will be played at the Emirates Stadium in London, the home of Arsenal.

Both sides haven't locked horns since they met at the 1998 World Cup in France. Scotland caused Brazil all kinds of trouble 13 years back, but an own goal from Tom Boyd eventually helped the South Americans to a 2-1 win.

Scotland impressed in an international friendly against Northern Ireland earlier this month when they recorded a 3-0 win.

Brazil on the other hand put in a rather disappointing performance against France in their last game and had to settle for a 1-0 loss in Paris.

Arsenal Are One Of Europe's Best Teams - Andoni Zubizarreta

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta brands Arsenal as one of Europe's biggest clubs.
Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has branded Champions League opponents Arsenal as one of the biggest sides in Europe ahead of their meeting on Wednesday night at the Emirates.

The Blaugrana travel to take on the Gunners having never lost to the north London club on five previous occasions, and knocked them out of the competition at the quarter-final stage last season.

Speaking to the media today, the former goalkeeper however praised the approach of the Premier League outfit, and stated that he was aware of how difficult progression to the next round will be.

“They have an interesting football proposal, and are very offensive," he said. "The atmosphere in London is spectacular. They have very good players, a definitive style, this is a big tie and it has all the ingredients to be an enjoyable evening.

“I do not think more or less of them after last season. Last year I saw it from outside the club, so now my perception has changed. The second leg will be decisive, but we will play 90 minutes tomorrow to try and take the best possible score home.”

Porto Coach Andre Villas-Boas Bites Back At Claims Benfica Are Better

Posted by admin on Monday 14 February 2011

Andre Villas-Boas has responded aggressively to claims Benfica are better than Porto this season.
Porto's coach Andre Villas-Boas has fought back after claims were made that his side are inferior to Lisbon's clubs. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus, and the media, suggested that Portugal's capital is playing better football than the rest of the league in comparison.

The media had jumped on some negative performances, particularly highlighting the amount of victories that Porto have scraped this season, and Benfica coach Jesus then said his side were playing the best football despite trailing Porto in the league.

"The declarations made by the Benfica coach are based on one cup game [Benfica's 2-0 win in the Portuguese cup at the Estadio do Dragao] when anything can happen. Even in that game Porto dominated, but Benfica happened to score an early goal and applied pressure," Villas-Boas was quoted as saying by Portugoal following their victory over Braga.

"FC Porto are the stronger team because they have the best attack, the best defence, because they are unbeaten in Europe and because they do not need to organise press conferences to talk about aggressions.

"Porto are better than Benfica because they do not have to buy a player on the day they are playing a team, so that he can't play against them [Olhanense's Jardel]. We don't have the strength of Benfica in regards to the impact of their brand, but we are Porto, who triumph at all levels, who triumph in Europe. The statistics are what they are.

"I don't remember seeing Benfica players so strong when they were saved in the Champions League by a last minute Lyon goal so they could qualify for the Europa League"

Porto currently sit 11 points clear at the top of the domestic league having played a game more than Benfica. However, Villas-Boas' side remain unbeaten and will play Benfica twice more before the end of the season; one game in the cup semi-final and once in the league.

The only time the two sides in question have met in the league so far this season, Porto smashed Benfica's 10 men 5-0, but were 3-0 to the good at half-time when both sides were still even.

"I hope that this is the season where it all comes good for PSG. I hope the team can keep it up in every competition and go as far as they can, all the way to finals in Europe and France if possible," said Nene to fifa.com.

"And we’ve got the league too. We’re in terrific form and we can’t afford to ease off, which can happen sometimes. Luckily for us the coach works hard on the psychological side of things and he’s let us know that we’ve won nothing yet.

"We just need to build on what we’ve done so far by reaching the Champions League, signing some big name players and going all out to win competitions. It’s not enough just to take part.

"The team’s on the right track, we’ve got good players and the standard here is very high. We need to build on what we’ve done and focus on reaching the Champions League. That’s the competition we all dream about playing in."

Chelsea Striker Fernando Torres: I Will Repay Roman Abramovich’s Faith In Me By Scoring Goals

Spaniard wants Liverpool fans to remember him fondly.
Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has vowed to score a plethora of goals to repay the faith that club owner Roman Abramovich has shown in him.

The Blues bought the Spaniard from Liverpool for £50 million in January, breaking the British transfer record which was set earlier on deadline day by Andy Carroll's £35m switch to Liverpool from Newcastle United.

"As a striker I'm asked for goals so I'll pay in goals," Torres said, according to The Sun.

"I still haven't seen Roman Abramovich. To put so much money down for me speaks of his dreams to keep on making history.

"We want to repay him for this effort. I have to pay my debt on the pitch. It's beautiful he paid so much for me.

"When the season started I expected to play a lot to forget about my injuries. But Liverpool didn't start well.

"There was no light at the end of the tunnel.

"An incredible door opened for me when there was six months of fight ahead of me.

"Now I can fight for what I've always dreamt about fighting for."

The 26-year-old's image at Liverpool has taken a beating after his mid-season move to a rival club, but the striker hopes that his former admirers at Anfield will understand his choice in due course.

"People on the outside can't understand some things about football," said Torres.

"The problem was that when Xabi Alonso [joined Real Madrid] and then Javier Mascherano left [for Barcelona] I could only see a light at the end of the tunnel when Chelsea opened the door.

"It just happened that my time came to leave. In time I hope Liverpool fans understand.

"I would like to return to Liverpool and be recognised. I only have gratitude towards the people, the club and everybody in Liverpool."

Tottenham Hotspur Manager Harry Redknapp: Gareth Bale Could Be Fit For Milan Clash

Boss admits Modric will miss out but thinks Spurs have a great chance.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is expecting winger Gareth Bale and midfielder Rafael van der Vaart to be passed fit in time to torment Milan’s defence for the clash at San Siro on Tuesday.

Redknapp previously said that while van der Vaart would feature on the team-sheet, Bale’s recovery would not come in time for the Champions League clash.

However, he is now confident that the chances of the hat-trick hero making his comeback in Italy are high and the Spurs boss is definitely not ruling out the possibility of the Welshman's playing in the key Champions League clash.

He told reporters: "No, I'll be honest with you, not for sure.

“I don't know but the specialist thinks Gareth should be OK. If he feels right tomorrow I'd like to think he'd be out there giving it a go.

“He caused so many problems for Inter, didn't he? Everyone who saw that game always asks about Gareth Bale now."

Interest in Arsenal captain denied.
An official at Real Madrid has denied that the club had an offer rejected for Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas according to French sports paper, L'Equipe.

It had been suggested that Los Merengues were looking to beat rivals Barcelona to the signature of the playmaker, who has been chased publicly by the Catalan giants.

The offer was reported to be in the region of €60m, with French striker Karim Benzema as a possible makeweight in the deal, but the anonymous club official rubbished such claims.

"At no time have we offered anything to Arsenal," ensures the source. "I can therefore confirm that Fabregas will not come to Real, and Benzema will not be leaving."

Fabregas has stated on several occasions that he is happy at Arsenal, but also that if he were to leave, it would only be for Barcelona, where he learned his trade in the famed La Masia academy.

Brazilian reveals Ramires recommended move to England.
David Luiz has insisted he is not concerned with the physical nature of the Premier League and is relishing the challenge as he prepares for his first Chelsea start against Fulham on Monday.

The Brazilian made his debut for the Blues in last weekend’s defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge and has admitted the game in England is vastly different to what he is used to.

"I have seen a lot of the Premier League on TV and I understand it's a lot faster and more physical than the football I was used to in Brazil and Portugal,” he told Sky Sports.

"But football is a physical game and if I didn't like that side of it I would be playing tennis!"

The 23-year-old also revealed his relief at finally making the move to London on transfer deadline day after it had appeared earlier in the week that the deal might break down

“I was concerned that everyone was leaving it until the last minute but I never lost faith I would sign for Chelsea," he added.

"I spoke to Ramires many times during the negotiations.

"We were good friends during our time together at Benfica and he always spoke very positively about Chelsea and English football.”

Loanee hints he could extend stay at Molineux.
Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara, currently on loan at Wolves, has revealed the debt of gratitude he feels he owes Arsenal having begun his career at the club.

The midfielder did not make a first-team appearance for the Gunners but spent five years in north London prior to signing for neighbours Spurs in 2003 and will come face-to-face with his former team this weekend as Wolves travel to the Emirates.

Speaking to The Guardian, O’Hara revealed what he felt he had learnt at Arsenal and how it still influenced his game today.

"I was at the Arsenal school training every day from 15 years old," he said.

"The structure there is fantastic. All the things I like to do, keeping the ball and passing it, all the things I enjoy about football come from Arsenal. They made me the player I am now."

However, the midfielder chose to swap one north London club for another, citing a lack of first-team opportunities as his prime motivator.

Juventus Coach Luigi Del Neri: We Need To Play With Intensity Against Inter

Del Neri claims that Juventus need to be organised against Inter.
Juventus coach Luigi Del Neri says that his side need to play with intensity and maintain organisation if they are to defeat Inter in the Derby d'Italia on Sunday evening.

Del Neri told the press on Saturday, “We’re in good shape and the group is stronger and more balanced, having recovered some injured players and through the recent signings we’ve made.”

“We need to play well, with a high intensity. It’s a great match, full of passion, emotion and one that’s of extreme importance to our fans and the club.

"[Former Inter coach Rafael] Benitez is a great manager but struggled with injuries. Since arriving, Leonardo has done a fine job, helped by the likes of Zanetti who is an exemplary player in every sense.”

On the role to be played by defender Giorgio Chiellini and midfielder Claudio Marchisio, Del Neri remarked, “At the moment, Giorgio will play left-back until our other left sided options regain fitness. We’ll see what happens, for me a player is a player.

“The organisation of the team is the most crucial element, but wherever Marchisio’s played he’s been effective and scored important goals. He’s a key player for us in any role."

Wayne Rooney: Derby Winner Was Best Goal I've Ever Scored

England man scores spectacular late overhead kick.
Wayne Rooney sealed victory for Manchester United over bitter rivals Manchester City with a sensational bicycle kick and claimed it was the best he's ever netted.

With the teams drawing 1-1 the England man struck ten minutes from time to send an unstoppable overhead effort from the edge of the area directly into Joe Hart's top corner.

The result cements United's position at the summit of the Premier League, leaving them eight points clear of their third placed rivals who have played a game more.

Rooney confirmed that the strike was the first of its type he has scored since turning professional and when asked about whether it was the best of his career he told Sky Sports: "Yeah I think so. I saw the ball come in the box and I thought why not.

"I tried to get in a good position from when Nani crossed it. Nine times out of 10 they go over the crossbar or wide. I tried it and thankfully it's gone in the top corner.

"You don't have time to think about what you're gonna do. It's the first one since I started playing professionally so I'm delighted, especially as it has given us three points."

Despite receiving plaudits for the spectacular nature of his winner, Rooney was quick to acknowledge the importance of the goal to his sides' effort in the title race, while expressing discontent with his overall performance in the derby.

"To be honest I was not too pleased with my overall performance today but I spoke to a few of the lads and they said 'stay up there, in the box and you will get your chance'. Thankfully I have done that and managed to put it away.

"For the importance of the league, after dropping three points last week [at Wolves], it was important that we kept that gap between ourselves and City.

"I thought it was a close game but we created the better chances and deserved to win. More importantly, it's three points which keep us top of the league."

“I don’t have any regrets. There were never any regrets. It’ll always be Morocco in my heart. That will never change. I am proud of my match. I was able to get us a penalty and I’m just proud of my first match with Morocco. It pleases me,” he said.

Carcela added that he hearing everybody in the stadium singing the Moroccan national anthem with one voice gave him shivers and that he also was happy with how he got along with his new team-mates.

“It was like a childhood dream, I found all the happiness I was looking for. I feel good in this group. There’s a good ambience and everything is going well, we get along with each other,” he explained.

We’re Going To Go For The Win Against Algeria – Sudan Coach Mohamed Abdallah Mazda

Posted by admin

The hosts of the 2011 African Championship of Nations are already through to the second round but are going to fight their hardest against the Fennecs.
Speaking at a press conference, Sudan coach Mohamed Abdallah Mazda has assured reporters and fans that his players were not going to take it easy on Algeria in their final group encounter on February 12 even though they have already secured qualification to the second round after two narrow wins over Gabon and Uganda. The Fennecs need only one point to be certain of progressing to the next stage.

“We’re going to give everything to get the three points of victory and to finish the first round gracefully. We’re going to be fair play and make every effort to meet this challenge,” explained the manager according to DZfoot.net.

Meanwhile, Mazda highlighted the team’s offensive efficiency as the main factor that he wanted to see improve in the coming games after seeing his team only score one goal in each of their wins despite having many opportunities to put more away.

“The team is getting better from one game to the next. We’re creating quite a few opportunities without finishing them all. I think my players are trying a bit too hard to please their supporters. We’re going to work harder in training to improve our offensive output,” he said.

Giuseppe Rossi Could Leave Villarreal For An Italian Club If The Right Offer Arrives

The agent of Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi reveals his client could leave the yellow Submarines for an Italian club if the right offer arrives.
The agent of Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi has revealed his client could still make a possible move to an Italian club during the summer transfer window only if the right offer arrives.

The 24-year-old reccently signed a contract extension with the Yellow Submarines until 2016, but Federico Pastorello hinted at the possibility, as well as Rossi's recent performance for the Azzurri againts Germany in an international friendly.

"It does not surprise me that Rossi played well against Germany," Pastorello told Radio Sportiva in an interview. "Whoever knows him knows his quality and with some confidence shown in him, he could get a starting XI spot.

"The coach makes the choice and they should not be put into discussion. Giuseppe has scored more than 20 goals and his future as an Azzurri could only get better."

Pastorello admits that an offer from Tottenham did come in, but was quickly rejected by the club.

"Giuseppe has a contract clause of €40 million. Tottenham had offered €35m this winter, but Villarreal said no because it came in the final days of the transfer window, as well as him being an important player. I am convinced that in future - we shall see whether in the summer - him leaving, even for much less.

"He has settled well where he is, but he is Italian and there is the will to return to Italy, but the contract renewal was made because of his will to stay at the club.

"[Tommaso] Ghirardi had made an offer of €8.5m previously. I am also looking for big clubs ho may be interested in a co-ownership deal, but I am not finding what I am looking for. Fiorentina also tried to sign him, but there was not a real interest in him, and he decided to stay with Villarreal," he concluded.

Real Madrid Star Cristiano Ronaldo: I've Never Seen A Club As Great As Real Madrid

Posted by admin

Cristiano Ronaldo has labelled Real Madrid as a 'great' club, impressed by everything he has seen at the club.
Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has labelled his club as "great" as he has been impressed with everything he has observed.

The Portugal star also promised to try and win the Copa del Rey, and score a goal against bitter rivals Barcelona in the final.

"I've never seen a club as great as Real Madrid. It is impressive on all levels: in its greatness, in its fanbase, in its history," Ronaldo revealed to Cadena SER. "The reaction we get is incredible wherever we go.

"I'm accustomed to dealing with unpleasant situations. I sometimes get bothered by things I hear or that people say to me, but they are a part of my life. I only listen when they say 'This Portuguese player is very good.' I don't need people to annoy me in order to play well.

"I always try to give my best when I'm on the pitch and I try to help my team win with goals and passes. I always try to be the best."

Ronaldo admits to being a target by his opponents, but has learnt not to retaliate.

"Look at my legs and see how bruised they are. But that's normal. I'm used to being challenged," he said. "I try not to answer back. I get up and continue playing.
"I was kicked around the same way when I was a kid, and I got up and carried on because they were all bigger than me."

"In order to be successful you have to believe and feel you can become a footballer. If you work hard I'm sure you can achieve what you want. Everyone has one chance in their lives and they have to make good use of it.

After being involved in 34 appearance for the Blancos this season, Ronaldo says he is still feeling strong and ready to perform for the second-half of the season.

"I don't feel tired. I feel very well," continued the Portuguese midfielder. "I've felt even better in the last stretch of the championship. I think this is obvious on the pitch."

"We will win the Copa del Rey final and I will try to score."

The 26-year-old has scored 34 goals this term. Real Madrid sit in second place in La Liga, seven points behind Barcelona.

Robin Leproux Admits PSG's Main Focus Is Not To Be Ligue 1 Champions

Paris Saint-Germain president Robin Leproux says many may believe it is his side aim to win the Ligue 1, but it is not.
Paris Saint-Germain president Robin Leproux has admitted there is still a long way to go until his side can be considered genuine contenders for the Ligue 1 title.

The French capital club are currently in second position, five points behind league leaders Lille, but Leproux says the side are aiming to have a strong season rather than win the title.

"You may think that winning the league title is our goal, but it is not," the president told L'Equipe TV.

"If at the end of the season we are close, we will do everything to get the title because it is missed and needed in Paris. But there are a lot of ifs because we can claim it."

The last time Les Rouge-et-Blau won the league was in 1994.

Juventus & Inter Are Closely Following Porto Defender Rolando

Posted by admin

The agent of Porto defender Rolando has admitted that several Italian clubs are interested in signing his client.
The agent of Porto defender Rolando has confirmed he has been approached by Italian clubs Inter and Juventus over the possibility of his client moving to Italy over the summer transfer window, after failing to land him during the winter.

Peppino Tirri also revealed clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool also sent scouts to watch the international friendly between Portugal and Argentina, paying close attention to the 25-year-old, according to Calciomercato.

"On Wednesday, there were observers to follow him from many clubs including Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United and Liverpool," Tirri said.
"There are possibilities he arrives in Italy, we will work from here to June but there have been approaches with Juventus and Inter.

"The player's rating is very high. €15million? Even a little more," he concluded.

Rolando moved to the Portuguese giants in 2008 after moving from Belenenses. He has made 60 appearances for the club, and scored six goals.

West Ham Win Bidding War With Tottenham For Olympic Stadium

Posted by admin on Wednesday 9 February 2011

The Olympic Park Legacy Company have decided that West Ham's bid for the Olympic Stadium is superior to the one submitted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Now the OPLC will be required to present their findings at a meeting on Friday before the government and London's mayor Boris Johnson will make their final decision in a few weeks times.

The news comes after months of planning and preparation by both bidding teams, with the first rumours of Tottenham submitting a rival bid to West Ham coming in July 2010. But that was only the start of the controversy.

Tottenham planned to maintain an 80,000 capacity but tear down the existing stadium to build a venue purpose-built for the sole use of football was released in November, which completely opposed West Ham’s proposal to keep the athletics track as part of a mixed-use community-centric stadium.
This led to the West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold, along with right-hand woman Karren Brady starting a war of words against the Tottenham hierarchy, before Spurs' own fans began to protest against the proposed move away from N17 during a game against Liverpool.

To combat the planned demolition of the athletics track, Spurs proposed a redevelopment of the decrepit Crystal Palace National Sports Centre as the two were asked for more information about their plans for the stadium by the OPLC in January.

Germany Coach Joachim Loew Satisfied With Draw Against Italy

Posted by admin

Germany coach Loew feels his side could have beat Italy, but will settle for the draw.
Germany coach Joachim Loew is satisfied with the 1-1 draw against Italy, but said his side should have taken their chances to make it 2-0.

Miroslav Klose sent the Germans on their way in Dortmund and they looked set to win the match, but a late goal from Giuseppe Rossi saw the affair end all square.

"It was an entertaining match overall and a good test from both teams," Loew told Kicker.de after the game.

"We tried our best and played well, but we were unable to get the win, despite having the chances to make it 2-0.

"Italy are a good side with great talent."

Jack Wilshere: I'm Glad My Full England Debut Was A Win

Arsenal youngster happy with first international start.
England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has proclaimed his delight upon being involved in a victory in his first international start.

England were 2-1 victors over Denmark courtesy of a second half winner from substitute Ashley Young. The Aston Villa man scored his first international goal after Daniel Agger put the Danes one up before the game was brought back level within the first 10 minutes by Darren Bent.

Wilshere played the first 45 minutes of the international friendly against the Scandinavians and looked good playing in the “holding role” Capello has earmarked for the youngster.

The 19-year-old told reporters: “Quite similar to my role at Arsenal but just not going forward as much and playing with the players I was with made it easy. The main thing is that we won. It was a good performance and we can take a lot from the game."

The Arsenal prospect was patriotic when questioned on making his full debut for the Three Lions.

He said: "It was great to play for your country and I'm glad my debut was a win. It was a difficult game in midfield and personally pleased with my performance.”

The Starting Denmark vs England Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of Denmark vs England match. England travelled to Denmark in August 2005 unbeaten in the calendar year and having conceded just one goal during that time. The big names were all included, with Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney starting a game that was seen as a mere stepping stone friendly ahead of more important World Cup qualifying matches.

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men were mistaken if they thought their Scandinavian opponents could be taken lightly. A second-half horror show saw Denmark run out 4-1 winners, with Dennis Rommedahl and Jon Dahl Tomasson among the scorers. David James, on as a substitute at half-time, claimed after conceding four goals in 45 minutes that he was not mentally prepared for the match.

Possible starting XI of Denmark: Lindegaard; Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, S Poulsen; Enevoldsen, Eriksen, C Poulsen, Silberbauer; Rommedahl; Bendtner.

Possible starting XI of England: Hart; Johnson, Dawson, Terry, Cole; Walcott, Lampard, Wilshere, Milner; Bent, Rooney.

The Starting Turkey vs South Korea Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of Turkey vs South Korea match. On Wednesday evening, Guus Hiddink, Turkey coach, will be reunited with the side who earned so much acclaim under his charge at the 2002 World Cup, South Korea. The Dutchman is hoping to reach the same heights he managed with the Taegeuk Warriors in his new position leading the Turks, and he will view Wednesday’s encounter as an important stepping stone towards future success.

Qualifying for the European Championships in 2012 is Turkey’s most immediate goal, but after four matches it no longer looks an obvious one. Earning an automatic place looks impossible as they trail a powerful Germany side by six points, and even winning second won’t be especially easy after suffering a shock 1-0 reverse against Azerbaijan in October

Turkey

A squad almost wholly comprising of domestic-based players has been named by Guus Hiddink. Mehmet Ekici, Hamit Altintop and Tunay Torun are the exceptions; all three ply their trade in the Bundesliga.

South Korea

Yoon Suk-Young, Lee Sang-Duk, Hong Chul and Nam Tae-Hee all hope to make their international debuts.

Kim Yong-Dae, Kwak Tae-Hwi, Cho Yong-Hyung, Yeom Ki-Hun and Yoo Byung-Soo have all dropped out of the squad.

The Starting Germany vs Italy Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of Germany vs Italy match. Germany were on course to the final of the 2006 World Cup held in their own country until Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero struck in the extra-time period for Italy in the semi-finals. The 2-0 loss saw Die Mannschaft head towards the exit while the Azzurri went on to lift the World Cup trophy for the fourth time in their history.

Since then, though, it's been a tale of stark contrast, with one side developing and progressing in leaps and bounds while the other radically spiralling down into the abyss. Germany reached the final in Euro 2008 and the semis in the World Cup in the summer, while Italy lost to Spain in the last-eight in Austria and Switzerland and failed to get past the group stage in South Africa.

Germany

Loew has remarked that only two positions are yet to be filled in his starting line-up, which means that the left-back and one of the two centre-backs slots are up for grabs.

Manuel Neuer will start in goal behind Lahm (at right back) and Per Mertesacker (centre-back). Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira will be the two defensive midfield pivots in a 4-2-3-1 formation that will have Miroslav Klose as the targetman upfront with Thomas Mueller, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Oezil just behind him.

Italy

Prandelli has confirmed his starting line-up, which will follow a 4-3-3 design. Gianluigi Buffon returns between the posts and Mattia Cassani, Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Ranocchia and Giorgio Chiellini will shape up the backfour.

Brazil-born Thiago Motta will make his debut for Italy in midfield alongside Riccardo Montolivo and Daniele De Rossi, while Stefano Mauri, Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini will form the front-three.

The Starting France vs Brazil Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of France vs Brazil match. Wednesday’s encounter between France and Brazil will take fans of les Bleus back 13 years to remember the balmy July evening their side recorded a 3-0 success over the Selecao to lift the World Cup. Laurent Blanc should have captained his country that day, but for an unjust suspension, but returning to the Stade de France in midweek he will lead his side from the dugout.

Zinedine Zidane’s brace helped cement the No.10’s reputation as one of the game’s all-time greats, and it is notable that les Bleus are without a player of such calibre at present. French football has fallen upon some rocky times over the course of the decade or so, but Blanc is showing signs of being able to put their pieces back together after a dreadful World Cup 2010.

France

Laurent Blanc’s panel has remained unchanged since it was named last Thursday. Patrice Evra and Jeremy Toulalan have both been overlooked, while Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri are the main injury absentees.

Brazil

Neymar will play for the Under-20s instead of the full team this week, while familiar faces such as Maicon, Felipe Melo and Luis Fabiano cannot break into Mano Menezes’ squad, which contains a mixture of youngsters and more hardened pros.

Line Up Argentina vs Portugal Preview-Prediction Starting Eleven

The Starting Argentina vs Portugal Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of Argentina vs Portugal match. The last time Argentina played a team from Iberia was in September when they took on European and world champions Spain in Buenos Aires. On that occasion the Albiceleste ran out 4-1 winners in what was a supreme performance and one that shattered Spain right to the core.

Since then, though, it's been mixed luck for the former world champions as they were defeated 1-0 by Japan in another international friendly in Saitama but got the better of Brazil in Doha in November, thanks to a scintillating Lionel Messi late goal.

Argentina

Sergio Batista has already announced his starting line-up. In a 4-3-3 formation, Sergio Romero will start in goal and Javier Zanetti, Nicolas Burdisso, Gabriel Milito and Marcos Rojo will form the back-four, although Ezequiel Garay is on standby as Milito's replacement since the Barcelona centre-back suffered a knock during Tuesday's training.

Ever Banega, Javier Mascherano and Esteban Cambiasso will form a flat midfield trio and Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria are set to commence in attack that will have width and finese as well as pace.

Striker Diego Milito is injured and so is Gonzalo Higuain, while Tevez and Demichelis were left out of it altogether.

Portugal

Paulo Bento could deploy a formation that will have Eduardo in goal and Jose Bosingwa, Bruno Alves, Ricardo Costa and Fabio Coentrao in defence, although Rolando could also slot in place of Costa. Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho are injured.

In midfield and attack it could either be a flat-three of Carlos Martins, Raul Meireles and Joao Moutinho with Nani, Hugo Almeida and Ronaldo deployed as the three forwards, or Almeida playing as the lone striker upfront with Nani and Ronaldo behind him as the creative minds.

Ricardo Quaresma is back in form after a good season with Turkish giants Besiktas and there are whispers that he could even make the starting xi against Argentina.

The Starting Marocco vs Niger Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of Marocco vs Niger match. This will only be the second match in charge for former Marseille coach Eric Gerets and the Belgian has called up an interesting mix of talent from the domestic league and Europe to ascertain who he can count on in upcoming 2012 AFCON qualifying, particularly the must win encounter against Algeria in March. His first outing with Morocco finished in a 1-1 away draw against Northern Ireland that saw the north Africans show some of their potential but fall well short of fully satisfying their fans.

Moroccan football has been in a notable decline since their final appearance at the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia but the recruitment of Gerets has given many Atlas Lions fans hope that the worst dies are behind them. They are currently in second place of their AFCON qualifying group after a disappointing draw against the Central African Republic and a positive away win against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars.

The Starting Macedonia vs Cameroon Line Up Preview.
This is the preview and starting line up and starting eleven prediction of Macedonia vs Cameroon match. Macedonia are playing Cameroon for the first time, and their choice for the robust African side can best be described as an appropriate test ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifying clash of Group B against big guns Republic of Ireland, which is slated for the end of March.

Cameroon’s recent win over Poland 3-0 in Szczecin, with Inter Milan forward Samuel Eto’o shining away with a brace, combined with their record as four-time winners of the African Cup of Nations, probably lured the Macedonians into having them as sparing partners ahead of their vital away fixture against the Boys in Green.

Probable starting XI of Macedonia: Edin Nuredinoski, Nikolce Noveski, Igor Mitreski, Goran Popov, Vance Sikov, Velice Sumulikoski, Darko Tasevski, Muhamed Demiri, Goran Pandev, Ivan Trickovski, Ilco Naumoski

Probable starting XI os Cameroon: Guy Roland Ndy Assembe, Sébastien Bassong, Gaetan Bong, Stéphane Mbia, Aurelien Chedjou, Matthew Mbuta Andongcho, Somen Tchoyi, Landry Nguemo, Choupo-Moting, Achille Webo, Samuel Eto’o

Lazio Coach Edoardo Reja Disappointed With Chievo Draw

Coach Edy Reja thought Lazio deserved more during the 1-1 draw against Chievo.
Lazio failed to keep up the pace with second place Napoli following a frustrating draw with Chievo at the Stadio Olimpico and Aquile coach Edy Reja bemoaned the dropped points in view of his side’s positive performance.

“The boys played well today,” he declared to SkySport.

“Chievo did well to press the ball for the entire 90 minutes and this made it difficult to create numerous goalscoring chances.

“My side did everything they could to search for victory and unfortunately we conceded on a corner. We need to work harder to avoid this momentarily lapses in concentration.

“They only had one chance on goal and scored and when this is the case it is always hard to stomach the result.

“I thought we deserved victory this afternoon but this is football.

“We are improving in terms of intensity and level of performance and this is important at this stage of the season.”

As Napoli moved to within three points of leaders Milan following the 2-0 victory over Cesena this afternoon, Partenopei tactician Walter Mazzarri refused to talk about his side’s scudetto chances underlining the importance of taking things a game at a time.

“We are only focused on ourselves,” he declared to SkySport.

“After a terrible performance against Chievo during the week it was very important to bounce back.

“I was delighted with the manner in which my men did that this afternoon and the result is far more important in this respect.

“We understood where the mistakes were made and managed to put things right.

“Obviously we were spurred on by our fans this afternoon and this always helps. The supporters have taken the recent results with the right level of balance and this has helped the side to stay calm from one result to the next.”

“My men put in a decent showing for the entire 90 minutes and we could have even won given the chances.

“It’s never easy to integrate new arrivals after the transfer window, but I must give credit to the likes of [Antonio] Floro Flores for the manner in which they are uniting our team work ethic.”

Fiorentina's Sinisa Mihajlovic Happy With Parma Point

Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic settled for a point as he witnessed a much better away performance from his Fiorentina outfit.
As Fiorentina sealed a rare point away from home following the 1-1 draw with Parma, Viola tactician Sinisa Mihajlovic praised his men for the positive manner in which they approached the game.

“We came from behind with a determined performance today,” he declared to SkySport.

“Even before Parma scored I think my men were playing very well and they punished us on their first scoring chance of the game.

“My men pressed high and took the game to the opposition and we were rewarded for this with a point.

“It would have been nice to take home all three points but after the third fixture in seven days I can’t demand too much from my side.

The coach was then probed on the status of Adrian Mutu who came on after a second half substitute after having been reintegrated into the side during the week.

“Adrian is still a little behind and it will be down to him to prove to me and the teammates when he is ready. Of course I welcome the extra choices but I need to be certain he is in top condition before he takes a starting place again.”

Celtic Manager Neil Lennon Delighted With Side's Performance After Draw At Rangers

Posted by admin

Hoops boss delighted with 10-man team's spirit.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon believes his side can be proud of their performance after coming from a goal down and a man down to claim a Scottish Cup replay against Rangers in a frantic Old Firm fixture at Ibrox.

Scott Brown’s second half equaliser means that both sides will have played each other an incredible seven times by the time the season is finished.

Lennon spoke to BBC Radio Scotland afterwards, and believed the sending off of goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who brought down Steven Naismith to give the home side a penalty, was justified.

“It was a fair decision we couldn’t complain," he said. "It came from us being slack and playing square balls when we shouldn’t have been in a period of the game were we were in control. We had to regroup at half time, made a couple of changes because I felt that we needed to be more positive in the final third.”

On his side’s overall performance, Lennon said: “I thought we were the better team, after the ropey start, a wonder goal from Ness, but these things happen in football. I thought that we weren’t great, but once we got a grip on the game I felt that the midfield four and five, were top draw today.”

He continued: “The full backs were great and once Majstorovic found his feet in the second half, were there was real belief about them and we kept taking the game to Rangers. We were always liable to get caught on the counter attack because we were a man down and that’s the way that Rangers like to play, but you gamble sometimes, and with the belief and the quality we showed today was top drawer.”

The former Celtic skipper was pleased with his side's resolve and efforts even during the period of the game where they were a man down.

“We troubled them and we kept playing out football, trying to break Rangers down which is not an easy thing to do. Brown’s scored a wonder goal; sometimes you need that class to change the game.

"From then on I felt there was only going to be one winner, McGregor’s made an unbelievable save towards the end, but Jelavic could have maybe put Davis in at the end, so on the balance of chances probably a draw was the right result, but on the balance of football and play I felt we deserved to win, I thought we were fantastic.”

The former Deportivo defender will undergo further examinations tomorrow at the Vicente Calderon before the likely period of recovery can be estimated.

Atleti lost the match courtesy of a hat-trick from Messi, and now lie well off the pace in the race for the Champions League positions in La Liga.

Ghana’s Sunderland Midfielder Sulley Muntari Sad After A Debut Defeat

The Ghanaian is not a happy man but set to focus on their next game against Spurs.
After tasting a debut defeat with Sunderland, Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari, said he is not a happy man but admits all is not over.

“It is not a good feeling right now,” the former Inter Milan left-footer said in a post-match briefing. “We wanted the three points of course and it was important to try to win here.”

“At the same time we played good football but we are not happy with the result.

“We controlled the game for long spells and that’s why we are having a lot of pain now. Stoke only kicked the ball in the air but they are strong.

“It’s a little bit sad but we have a good manager and good players here so we can bounce back.”

Stoke City recorded a 3-2 victory over the Wearsiders at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday but the Ghanaian is already looking forward to record his first win with Sunderland against Spurs next week.

“Now it is our job to move on from this. You have [to] go with it. If you lose a game, that is not the end of the life. We go back home to prepare for Spurs, which is a game we want to win at all costs, for sure,” Muntari added.

Levante coach Luis Garcia pleased with performance of team in victory over Villarreal.
Levante coach Luis Garcia has claimed that his team’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal proves that his players can retain their place in La Liga.

Valdo’s neat finish in the second half proved to be the difference between the teams, and despite the best efforts of the home team, they could not level the match.

Garcia told journalists afterwards that he was delighted with the efforts of his team, saying: “We have blocked all routes to goal for Villarreal and left them without chances.

“They have not known how to get ahead of us, and never really hurt us, and that is a success when playing at a stadium like this. I’m very happy, although I would like to make one more goal for the team.

Atletico Madrid coach claims Barca ace is best player he's ever seen.
Following his side's 3-0 defeat by Barcelona, in which Lionel Messi scored all three goals, Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores heaped praise on the little Argentine, comparing him to Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano. He also admitted that Barcelona were the better side in the match.

"Messi is the best player I've seen, the Di Stefano of the 21st century," said Flores. "It was the universal Barcelona, number one, a great team. They have the ability to hypnotise an opponent."

Atletico goalkeeper David De Gea also had his say on the match, maintaining that his club were simply outclassed by a better team.

"We had no choice, the club has struggled and there is nothing to say about it," the keeper insisted. "It's difficult to win in the Nou Camp, and to beat Barcelona. The situation is complicated and you just have to get on with it."

Chelsea Set to Up Their Interest in Newcastle’s Cheikh Tiote in The Summer

Posted by admin

Chelsea will be returning to St. James’ Park in the summer, in an attempt to persuade Mike Ashley to let them sign Newcastle midfielder Cheikh Tiote, after being denied in the winter transfer window – according to a report in The News of the World.

The London outfit reportedly made an official approach for the 24-year-old last month, when owner Roman Abramovich told them to ‘name their price’, but after losing star striker Andy Carroll to Liverpool for a British transfer record fee, the Magpies were reluctant to lose Tiote's services too.

The defensive midfielder signed for a mere £4 million from FC Twente last summer, and has sparked interest from top clubs including Manchester United, who seek to replace Owen Hargreaves on a more permanent basis.

Newcastle are keen to keep the impressive Ivorian, having seen their squad weakened and failing to sign another striker before the 11pm deadline on January 31.

Tiote is currently placed 1151st in the Castrol Rankings, up from 1346th the previous month.

Toon manager Alan Pardew is reportedly setting up a potential move for 29-year-old Brazilian forward Ewerthon, as he looks to find a suitable replacement for Carroll.

Real Madrid Reignite Interest in Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard

Posted by admin

Real Madrid are reportedly stepping up their interest in signing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, which will make Reds fans nervous following the loss of Fernando Torres to Chelsea last week, according to the People.

Jose Mourinho wishes to sign the 30-year-old Kop hero, and Real are apparently ready to mount a £25 million bid for the midfielder.

The Portugese coach is looking to add to his squad in the summer, and has long admired the Englishman’s ability, regarding him as a worthy addition to his Madrid squad.

Mourinho hopes to be third time lucky in attempting to sign the Anfield talisman, as he previously failed on two occasions when manager of Chelsea.

Liverpool are, however, unlikely to let their skipper go, as club owners New England Sports Ventures look to invest and propel the Merseysiders back into the Champions League.

Despite Torres’ departure, Liverpool made consecutive record-breaking bids to acquire the services of Luis Suarez from Ajax and Andy Carroll from Newcastle, defiant statements of intent regarding their ambition and the direction in which they plan to take the club.

The Real Madrid boss has been infuriated by his club’s failure to back him in the transfer market as he looked to sign another striker in the wake of Gonzalo Higuain’s injury and doubts over the suitability of Kerim Benzema.

The Spaniards finally found movement and brought in Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a possible permanent transfer.

New Liverpool Striker Luis Suarez: I won't Panic if The Goals Don't Come

Red's No.7 keen on adding to his debut tally.
New Liverpool signing Luis Suarez is keen to build on his goalscoring debut at Anfield and fire the club into the Champions League but claims he won't panic if the goals dry up.

The 24-year-old, who joined from Ajax for £23.8 million, believes his goal against Stoke last Wednesday eased the pressure off his shoulders, but remains determined to keep on scoring to help propel the club amongst Europe’s elite and add to his tally in Sunday’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

"It went through my mind after the game against Stoke that now I have scored my first goal the pressure has eased a little," he said to the club’s official website.

"As a striker, you do think about scoring goals but that is not going to worry me now.

"I hope that I can settle in here very quickly both on and off the pitch.

"But I have never been the type of person to let pressures off the field affect my game. As soon as I step out on the park the only thing I concentrate on is the next 90 minutes. It has always been like that for me from an early age.

"It didn't matter whether I was playing for a junior team at Nacional in Uruguay or for the national team or Ajax."

The Liverpool No.7 depicts his reason for coming to the club, and hopes to push the club back into the Champions League.

"The reason I chose Liverpool was because this has always been a club I have equated with the Champions League.

"I am not suggesting we are definitely going to qualify this year, but the expectation is there.

"You can never say what will happen in football. We know we are a few points behind.

"Chelsea are in fourth place, but our hopes and expectations are that we will be fighting to get a place in the top four.

"All kinds of results can happen in English football, so it gives us hope that it could happen."

West Bromwich Albion Sack Manager Roberto Di Matteo

Baggies relieve boss from duties.
West Bromwich Albion have sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo and have placed him on gardening leave with instant effect.

The decision stems back from a unanimous decision between the club’s Board of Directors due to a poor run of form, having lost 13 of their last 18 games in all competitions and winning only three.

First-Team coach Michael Appleton will take charge of the managerial position until the board decide on a suitable appointment.

Chairman Jeremy Peace believes that the decision was in the club’s best interests, as they attempt to stay in the Premier League by fighting what is a very compact relegation zone.

"This has been a tough decision but we, as a Board, believe it is the right one to give the Club the best possible chance of remaining in the Barclays Premier League,” said Peace to the club’s official website.

Lionel Messi: Barcelona Proud To Beat Real Madrid's Record

With Barcelona's victory over Atletico Madrid, they have overtaken the Spanish record of 15 straight league wins, set by Real Madrid.
Barcelona's victory over Atletico Madrid tonight allowed them to break yet another record, this time winning more straight league games than any other team. The record of 15 was previously set in the 1960/61 season by Real Madrid, led by club legend Alfredo Di Stefano.

Lionel Messi also scored a hat-trick, which allowed him to take the lead in the Pichichi race, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Argentine magician downplayed the significance of this.

"I am not worried about being top scorer. What worries me is that the team stays on course and maintains the gap for our fans," he insisted.

Messi also spoke of the record beaten by his team, and reminded fans that it is too early to think of the Copa Del Rey final, which will be contested in April between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"We are proud to beat this record as it had lasted a long time, and was very hard to beat.

"We must now think of La Liga and the Champions League. The Cup final will come."

Newcastle's Leon Best Out Of Ireland Squad

Young striker suffering with a hamstring injury.
Newcastle striker Leon Best has been forced to withdraw from Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland squad to face Wales in the Nations Cup on Tuesday night.

Best damaged a hamstring whilst spearheading Newcastle’s four goal fight back against Arsenal on Saturday.

The 24-year-old grabbed the second of Newcastle’s four goals in an epic encounter at St James' Park but was replaced in the final minutes by Danny Guthrie.

Best was signed from Coventry City last season to bolster Newcastle’s promotion push but failed to make an impact until this season when notching a hat-trick in the 5-0 drubbing of West Ham.

Boasting four goals in just six Premier League starts, the injury comes as a blow to the Magpies who are now short of attacking options having lost Andy Carroll to Liverpool and Shola Ameobi to a fractured cheekbone in the space of a week.

The situation has prompted Newcastle boss Alan Pardew to scour the free-transfer market, with Middlesbrough old boy Jeremie Aliadiere linked as a potential short-term solution.

Bristol City striker Andy Keogh has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland squad as cover for Best and manager Giovanni Trapattoni has also lost Portsmouth midfielder Liam Lawrence to a calf injury.

The Republic enter Tuesday night’s clash with Wales without a win in three.

Toni scored his 100th Serie A goal in the 3-1 win over Cagliari.
Juventus picked up a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Cagliari on Saturday evening and goalscorer Luca Toni was delighted with his side’s display in Sardinia.
Alessandro Matri scored his first two goals for the Old Lady since his switch from the Isolani last week before the 33-year-old Italian striker came off the bench to score a superb header to hand Juventus their first away win in two months.

The victory was only the Bianconeri’s second in their last eight Serie A matches and Toni expressed his relief at escaping the Sant’Elia cauldron with all three points.

"It was a bit early to say we were finished this season," Toni told Sky Sport Italia after the match. "I scored my 100th goal in Serie A tonight and I am very happy.

"We suffered a bit at times during the match but I saw a good team out there in the second half."

Matri was jeered every time he touched the ball this evening but got the last laugh against his old club and Toni hailed his performance.

Cagliari coach Roberto Donadoni was less than pleased about his side's first half showing.
Cagliari coach Roberto Donadoni was disappointed with the Isolani's tentative first half display in the 3-1 loss to Juventus on Saturday evening.

The Bianconeri jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first 45 minutes before the Sardinians rallied with a goal of their own early in the second period and looked to have seized the momentum. But two more goals from the Old Lady doomed Donadoni's side to defeat.

"We started well in the second half and we managed to trouble Juventus," the 47-year-old tactician stated to Sky Sport Italia after the match. "I didn't like our energy in the first half and we were much too passive."

Donadoni went on to speak about Alessandro Matri's brace as the striker came back to haunt his old club.

Harry Redknapp: Tottenham Can Finish Above Arsenal

Spurs boss says he still wants Van Bommel.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes that his side can climb above Arsenal by the end of the season and added that only Manchester United and Chelsea are consistent enough to challenge for the title.

Although Spurs are eight points behind the Gunners, who are currently in second place, Redknapp is insisting that they may surprise their north London rivals.

"I still think it's quite open. Man City are a good side, but it's not impossible, it's not impossible to finish above Arsenal. It's tough, but it's not impossible,” Redknapp said according to the Mirror.

"When everybody's fit, when we get Bale and Modric back, we've got a good team. We're a good team without them, but we are a better team with them, obviously, because they are our strongest players.

"Arsenal and City have done great. I wouldn't and couldn't knock them. I'm just saying of all the teams that are there, if we are going to finish above any of them - out of the four teams - I think it would be one of those two.

"It's going to be hard but if we are going to do it I think it'd likely to be one of those two, rather than Chelsea or United.

"United have had a big January and picked up points. We've had a few draws and it's a bit tougher for us. But 10 points - you can't give them the points."

Chile's Marcelo Bielsa Quits As Coach

The Argentine has had enough and said goodbye to Santiago.
Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed the fears of Chile fans by standing down as coach of the national team, mere months after guiding the Roja to the second round of the 2010 World Cup.

Reports last week indicated that the Argentine boss would stay on for the Copa America 2011, but by mid-afternoon the Chilean footballing world was rocked by rumours that instead Bielsa would depart due to 'incompatibility' with the new leadership at the Chile Football Federation.

This was confirmed at a brief press conference in the early evening on Friday, during which Bielsa explained that his attempts to co-operate with the new leadership on such projects as the creation of a selection committee had failed.

Bielsa said, "On Thursday I made my decision, and today I quit. I agree, and regret, that it's turned into a soap opera. But honestly, I don't feel responsible for that."

On the problems behind the scenes, he added, "Sergio Jadue (Chilean Football Federation Chief) released information to the press that wasn't true.

"I never made any demands - I just listened."

Newcastle United Made Last-Gasp Bid For Thierry Henry

Posted by admin

Newcastle United made a last-gasp attempt to sign former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, according to The Daily Express.

The Magpies, who lost star striker Andy Carroll for a record-breaking £35 million at the eleventh hour on transfer deadline day, are in desperate need of reinforcements following Shola Ameobi’s cheekbone fracture at Fulham on Wednesday.

Henry, who is currently training with Arsenal ahead of the new MLS season, is already committed to the New York Red Bulls' pre-season schedule in Mexico, with their first game on March 19.

Despite this, Newcastle approached Darren Dein, son of former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein and a good friend of Henry’s, to see if a short-term deal could be done, in which Henry would have received a six-figure salary.

Speaking to The Daily Express, a Newcastle source said: “We had a real attempt to get Henry but the start of the MLS season worked against us.

“Carroll’s eleventh-hour departure prevented us getting a regular signing to replace him. But we would like to find a quality replacement, given that we have to look at players outside regular club contracts.”

Reports have emerged in recent days that Newcastle made an attempt to sign Liverpool forward Milan Jovanovic as part of the Carroll deal, whilst a deal for free agent Jeremie Aliadiere may be on the cards as the North-East club scramble to fill the goalscoring void.

Diego Milito: I Was Never Close To Joining Jose Mourinho At Real Madrid As I Prefer Inter

Posted by admin

Milito admits he is not attracted by the lure of Real Madrid as he ponders Mourinho return to Inter in future.
Diego Milito insists a Jose Mourinho reunion is impossible unless the Real Madrid coach returns to Inter.

Milito, 31, has been linked with the Merengues since the summer when reports sparked suggestions he was Madrid-bound.

However, he is in no mood to make amendments to plans over his future as he eyes an Inter stay.

"Was I close to leaving Inter last summer? No, never," he told Il Corriere dello Sport.

"What did I think when I read Mourinho wanted me in Madrid? It is always nice for me when an important coach like Mourinho wants me at Madrid, but I am happy at Inter."

Mourinho has been feeling the heat in Madrid following well documented tension with Jorge Valdano. His future has looked far from guaranteed, but Milito cannot see a Nerazzurri return.

"Mourinho return? I don't know if it is possible. At the moment we have Leonardo and it's not nice to speak about other coaches at Inter," added the striker.

"But, never say never in football. Mourinho for us was one of the most important and I think the doors here will always be open for him."

Arsenal Forward Nicklas Bendtner High In Self-Confidence

Posted by admin

Fellow striker Van Persie confident Manchester United will drop points.
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has unrivalled levels of self-confidence, according to French psychologist Jacques Crevoisier.

The Danish international aced psychometric tests to show a self-belief not seen in the likes of Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet and Nicolas Anelka.

Speaking with Swedish magazine Offside, Crevoisier said: “One of the categories is called ‘self perceived competence,’ i.e. how good the player himself thinks he is. On a scale up to 9, Bendtner got 10!

“We have never seen that before. Pat Rice was sitting next to me and couldn’t stop laughing.

“When Bendtner misses a chance, he is always genuinely convinced that it wasn’t his fault. You might say that’s a problem, and to a certain degree it can be.

Fernando Torres Reveals Chelsea Move Had Steven Gerrard’s Consent

Spaniard still believes Liverpool are moving in right direction.
Ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has revealed that his former captain Steven Gerrard gave his blessing to the striker's £50 million transfer to Chelsea, according to The Mirror.

Torres, who is in line to make his debut this Sunday against his former club following his switch to Stamford Bridge, has responded to claims that he disrespected Liverpool fans in recent days.

Now the Spanish World Cup winner has suggested that Kop legend Gerrard gave his seal of approval ahead of the British record-busting transfer, possibly in light of the midfielder’s own experiences with Chelsea in the past which saw him nearly join the west London club twice.

Speaking to reporters, Torres said: “Stevie was one of the first ones who called me and supported me, hoping for the best for me. Whether I left or stayed, he helped me and supported me, maybe because he’d been in the same situation first.
