Chelsea Striker Fernando Torres: I Will Repay Roman Abramovich’s Faith In Me By Scoring Goals

Spaniard wants Liverpool fans to remember him fondly.
Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has vowed to score a plethora of goals to repay the faith that club owner Roman Abramovich has shown in him.

The Blues bought the Spaniard from Liverpool for £50 million in January, breaking the British transfer record which was set earlier on deadline day by Andy Carroll's £35m switch to Liverpool from Newcastle United.

"As a striker I'm asked for goals so I'll pay in goals," Torres said, according to The Sun.

"I still haven't seen Roman Abramovich. To put so much money down for me speaks of his dreams to keep on making history.

"We want to repay him for this effort. I have to pay my debt on the pitch. It's beautiful he paid so much for me.

"When the season started I expected to play a lot to forget about my injuries. But Liverpool didn't start well.

"There was no light at the end of the tunnel.

"An incredible door opened for me when there was six months of fight ahead of me.

"Now I can fight for what I've always dreamt about fighting for."

The 26-year-old's image at Liverpool has taken a beating after his mid-season move to a rival club, but the striker hopes that his former admirers at Anfield will understand his choice in due course.

"People on the outside can't understand some things about football," said Torres.

"The problem was that when Xabi Alonso [joined Real Madrid] and then Javier Mascherano left [for Barcelona] I could only see a light at the end of the tunnel when Chelsea opened the door.

"It just happened that my time came to leave. In time I hope Liverpool fans understand.

"I would like to return to Liverpool and be recognised. I only have gratitude towards the people, the club and everybody in Liverpool."

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is expecting winger Gareth Bale and midfielder Rafael van der Vaart to be passed fit in time to torment Milan’s defence for the clash at San Siro on Tuesday.

Redknapp previously said that while van der Vaart would feature on the team-sheet, Bale’s recovery would not come in time for the Champions League clash.

However, he is now confident that the chances of the hat-trick hero making his comeback in Italy are high and the Spurs boss is definitely not ruling out the possibility of the Welshman's playing in the key Champions League clash.

He told reporters: "No, I'll be honest with you, not for sure.

“I don't know but the specialist thinks Gareth should be OK. If he feels right tomorrow I'd like to think he'd be out there giving it a go.

“He caused so many problems for Inter, didn't he? Everyone who saw that game always asks about Gareth Bale now."

Chelsea Defender David Luiz: If I Didn’t Like Physical Football I Would Play Tennis

David Luiz has insisted he is not concerned with the physical nature of the Premier League and is relishing the challenge as he prepares for his first Chelsea start against Fulham on Monday.

The Brazilian made his debut for the Blues in last weekend’s defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge and has admitted the game in England is vastly different to what he is used to.

"I have seen a lot of the Premier League on TV and I understand it's a lot faster and more physical than the football I was used to in Brazil and Portugal,” he told Sky Sports.

"But football is a physical game and if I didn't like that side of it I would be playing tennis!"

The 23-year-old also revealed his relief at finally making the move to London on transfer deadline day after it had appeared earlier in the week that the deal might break down

“I was concerned that everyone was leaving it until the last minute but I never lost faith I would sign for Chelsea," he added.

"I spoke to Ramires many times during the negotiations.

"We were good friends during our time together at Benfica and he always spoke very positively about Chelsea and English football.”

Chelsea head to Craven Cottage on Monday night hoping to complete a league double over their neighbours after a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge back in November.

Tottenham Midfielder Jamie O’Hara: Arsenal Made Me The Player I Am Today

Loanee hints he could extend stay at Molineux.
Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara, currently on loan at Wolves, has revealed the debt of gratitude he feels he owes Arsenal having begun his career at the club.

The midfielder did not make a first-team appearance for the Gunners but spent five years in north London prior to signing for neighbours Spurs in 2003 and will come face-to-face with his former team this weekend as Wolves travel to the Emirates.

Speaking to The Guardian, O’Hara revealed what he felt he had learnt at Arsenal and how it still influenced his game today.

"I was at the Arsenal school training every day from 15 years old," he said.

"The structure there is fantastic. All the things I like to do, keeping the ball and passing it, all the things I enjoy about football come from Arsenal. They made me the player I am now."

However, the midfielder chose to swap one north London club for another, citing a lack of first-team opportunities as his prime motivator.

Wayne Rooney: Derby Winner Was Best Goal I've Ever Scored

Wayne Rooney sealed victory for Manchester United over bitter rivals Manchester City with a sensational bicycle kick and claimed it was the best he's ever netted.

With the teams drawing 1-1 the England man struck ten minutes from time to send an unstoppable overhead effort from the edge of the area directly into Joe Hart's top corner.

The result cements United's position at the summit of the Premier League, leaving them eight points clear of their third placed rivals who have played a game more.

Rooney confirmed that the strike was the first of its type he has scored since turning professional and when asked about whether it was the best of his career he told Sky Sports: "Yeah I think so. I saw the ball come in the box and I thought why not.

"I tried to get in a good position from when Nani crossed it. Nine times out of 10 they go over the crossbar or wide. I tried it and thankfully it's gone in the top corner.

"You don't have time to think about what you're gonna do. It's the first one since I started playing professionally so I'm delighted, especially as it has given us three points."

Despite receiving plaudits for the spectacular nature of his winner, Rooney was quick to acknowledge the importance of the goal to his sides' effort in the title race, while expressing discontent with his overall performance in the derby.

"To be honest I was not too pleased with my overall performance today but I spoke to a few of the lads and they said 'stay up there, in the box and you will get your chance'. Thankfully I have done that and managed to put it away.

"For the importance of the league, after dropping three points last week [at Wolves], it was important that we kept that gap between ourselves and City.

"I thought it was a close game but we created the better chances and deserved to win. More importantly, it's three points which keep us top of the league."

West Ham Win Bidding War With Tottenham For Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Park Legacy Company have decided that West Ham's bid for the Olympic Stadium is superior to the one submitted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Now the OPLC will be required to present their findings at a meeting on Friday before the government and London's mayor Boris Johnson will make their final decision in a few weeks times.

The news comes after months of planning and preparation by both bidding teams, with the first rumours of Tottenham submitting a rival bid to West Ham coming in July 2010. But that was only the start of the controversy.

Tottenham planned to maintain an 80,000 capacity but tear down the existing stadium to build a venue purpose-built for the sole use of football was released in November, which completely opposed West Ham’s proposal to keep the athletics track as part of a mixed-use community-centric stadium.
This led to the West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold, along with right-hand woman Karren Brady starting a war of words against the Tottenham hierarchy, before Spurs' own fans began to protest against the proposed move away from N17 during a game against Liverpool.

To combat the planned demolition of the athletics track, Spurs proposed a redevelopment of the decrepit Crystal Palace National Sports Centre as the two were asked for more information about their plans for the stadium by the OPLC in January.

Ghana’s Sunderland Midfielder Sulley Muntari Sad After A Debut Defeat

The Ghanaian is not a happy man but set to focus on their next game against Spurs.
After tasting a debut defeat with Sunderland, Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari, said he is not a happy man but admits all is not over.

“It is not a good feeling right now,” the former Inter Milan left-footer said in a post-match briefing. “We wanted the three points of course and it was important to try to win here.”

“At the same time we played good football but we are not happy with the result.

“We controlled the game for long spells and that’s why we are having a lot of pain now. Stoke only kicked the ball in the air but they are strong.

“It’s a little bit sad but we have a good manager and good players here so we can bounce back.”

Stoke City recorded a 3-2 victory over the Wearsiders at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday but the Ghanaian is already looking forward to record his first win with Sunderland against Spurs next week.

“Now it is our job to move on from this. You have [to] go with it. If you lose a game, that is not the end of the life. We go back home to prepare for Spurs, which is a game we want to win at all costs, for sure,” Muntari added.

Chelsea Set to Up Their Interest in Newcastle’s Cheikh Tiote in The Summer

Chelsea will be returning to St. James’ Park in the summer, in an attempt to persuade Mike Ashley to let them sign Newcastle midfielder Cheikh Tiote, after being denied in the winter transfer window – according to a report in The News of the World.

The London outfit reportedly made an official approach for the 24-year-old last month, when owner Roman Abramovich told them to ‘name their price’, but after losing star striker Andy Carroll to Liverpool for a British transfer record fee, the Magpies were reluctant to lose Tiote's services too.

The defensive midfielder signed for a mere £4 million from FC Twente last summer, and has sparked interest from top clubs including Manchester United, who seek to replace Owen Hargreaves on a more permanent basis.

Newcastle are keen to keep the impressive Ivorian, having seen their squad weakened and failing to sign another striker before the 11pm deadline on January 31.

Tiote is currently placed 1151st in the Castrol Rankings, up from 1346th the previous month.

Toon manager Alan Pardew is reportedly setting up a potential move for 29-year-old Brazilian forward Ewerthon, as he looks to find a suitable replacement for Carroll.

Real Madrid are reportedly stepping up their interest in signing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, which will make Reds fans nervous following the loss of Fernando Torres to Chelsea last week, according to the People.

The Real Madrid boss has been infuriated by his club’s failure to back him in the transfer market as he looked to sign another striker in the wake of Gonzalo Higuain’s injury and doubts over the suitability of Kerim Benzema.

The Spaniards finally found movement and brought in Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a possible permanent transfer.

New Liverpool Striker Luis Suarez: I won't Panic if The Goals Don't Come

New Liverpool signing Luis Suarez is keen to build on his goalscoring debut at Anfield and fire the club into the Champions League but claims he won't panic if the goals dry up.

The 24-year-old, who joined from Ajax for £23.8 million, believes his goal against Stoke last Wednesday eased the pressure off his shoulders, but remains determined to keep on scoring to help propel the club amongst Europe’s elite and add to his tally in Sunday’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

"It went through my mind after the game against Stoke that now I have scored my first goal the pressure has eased a little," he said to the club’s official website.

"As a striker, you do think about scoring goals but that is not going to worry me now.

"I hope that I can settle in here very quickly both on and off the pitch.

"But I have never been the type of person to let pressures off the field affect my game. As soon as I step out on the park the only thing I concentrate on is the next 90 minutes. It has always been like that for me from an early age.

"It didn't matter whether I was playing for a junior team at ­Nacional in Uruguay or for the national team or Ajax."

The Liverpool No.7 depicts his reason for coming to the club, and hopes to push the club back into the Champions League.

"The reason I chose Liverpool was because this has ­always been a club I have equated with the Champions League.

"I am not suggesting we are ­definitely going to qualify this year, but the expectation is there.

"You can never say what will ­happen in ­football. We know we are a few points behind.

"Chelsea are in fourth place, but our hopes and expectations are that we will be fighting to get a place in the top four.

"All kinds of results can happen in English football, so it gives us hope that it could happen."
