Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is set to up his efforts to sign Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor on loan.

The former Chelsea manager is looking for a short term replacement for striker Gonzalo Higuain, with the Argentine forward set to miss the rest of the season.

And Adebayor looks to be the man to fill the gap as he will not be cup-tied for the Champions League - as long as Real are prepared to pay the bulk of his £160,000-a-week wages, according to the Daily Mail.

Although Real initially distanced themselves from additions to the playing staff in January, they have been forced to move as Higuain recovers from back surgery in America that will keep him out of action for at least four months.

"We are exploring the market now the uncertainty around Higuain has beeen resolved," said director general Jorge Valdano.

"We'll see if we can find a player to help us for six months.

"Many names are being mentioned and it's best not to go into details. But it's true we are looking for a No. 9."

Real are also thought to be considering moves for veteran Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose and Hercules hit-man Nelson Haedo Valdez, as well as former Madrid man Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Adebayor has reportedly rejected loan moves to other Premier League clubs as he holds out for a high-profile offer.
